I am married to Diane Buhler. We have a beautiful 10 year old daughter, Olivia. We have 4 cats, Rae, Luke, Chip and Dale. Olivia named all of our pets. We live in the South End of West Palm Beach. We like to scuba dive, go biking and we travel as much as we can. My wife founded a Not-For-Profit called Friends of Palm Beach. She cleans our beaches. She has monthly clean-ups to protect our marine life. We are focused on giving back to our community and are involved with several charitable organizations.
I got into the mortgage business by accident. I owned several properties and had gone through the mortgage process several times for purchases, refinances as well as construction loans. Most times I was unhappy with the process. It was either because I had no idea what was happening during the process because of poor communication or I felt the rate was too high or the fees were to high. The process was always more challenging than I was told it would be. Because of this, I decided to get my mortgage license so I could understand the process and help myself with my real estate investments.
What I found out was shocking. At the time (things are very different now), you only needed a high school diploma, take a 24 hour class and pass a state exam. That was it and you were a licensed Mortgage Broker. I knew so little about mortgages that there was no way I would have even tried to help someone else get a mortgage. I took every class available to me. I took a class in Processing , Underwriting, Residential Mortgages, Commercial Mortgages, and Note Brokering. I wanted to know as much as I could so I could help myself. Once people I knew found out that I was doing mortgages, then I starting being asked to help my friends, family and business associates get their own mortgage. At that point I realized I had a business and Palm Beach First Financial started and continued to grow.
I wanted all my client's to have a good experience getting a mortgage. What that means is I set realistic expectations, I accurately or over-disclose the cash needed to close so my clients aren't told that they need to bring hundreds or thousands of dollars more to closing. In the instances were my clients are unable to get a mortgage, I explain why they can't get a mortgage now. I give them a plan of action so they can get a mortgage at some point in the future. And, I am available to guide them while they get mortgage ready.
